I've been testing two new live distro's. The first is http://www.slax.org. I really like the look and feel of this. The modules (free software, or GNUpl) is excellent and compares well and or blows away windows. It is fairly intuitive on getting it up and running but for the complete new user it could take time to get it up and running.
All that you really need to do to get Slax is visit the website and download a copy of the version that appeals to you. After that restart your computer with the disk in your main drive, you may need to enter your system bios (it may sound daunting but it is fairly safe and easy to set the computer's first boot device to cdrom). Once you have achieved this the Slax begins to run itself from the cdrom leaving no permanant changes to your computers windows settings or personal files. It will eventually come up to a login screen; here you type in root (which in windows would be the administrator account) and the password is root backwards toor. Then up comes the # sign which is the linux equivalent to :/ here you choose your desktop interface somthing which the open source community has completly outdone microsoft in customization. I almost always type startx.
Once the cd runs through its setup, which takes from 1-5 minutes depending on your computer,(usually faster than a windows boot!) Up comes a desktop similar to microsofts windows product line, but better, it's free.
More to come in part 2 where I will feature booting Elive, an amazing audio video production livecd!!!!

"My Digital Home Studio Dream"

My interest in recording sound began when I was about 10 years old. I had a very inexpensive cassette player that I would record my own scripted comedy news casts on. Being on a budget even then I worked with what I had to accomplishmy goal. Same as now.

I live in a college town, come around twice a year the students leave town, leaving on the curb old computers, monitors, "broken" gadgets, and things they simply don't want to move. I find so many cool things it's become a hobby of mine to go mining for treasure at these times of the year. In comes my fascination with Linux.

Windows is a pig. It take forever to load, you need to go way out of your way to find drivers for second-hand devices, not to mention the cost. This left no alternative but the Gnu/Linux environmet.

I have been using the Damn Small Linux live cd for a couple of years now. This OS is great to test hardware for functionality. Most standard devices are automatically recognized and configured at boot up. Devices such as scanners, tv tuner cards, and webcam's can be difficult if not impossible to get functional in this envirnoment without research, patience, and a little luck. Standad devices such as network cards, cd/dvd -r -rw, and usb storage seem to work flawlessyly in the DSL environment. It also comes stock with Firefox, and a host of other utilities and standard office software. Above all is the cost, free. Ease of use; burn a copy on a cd-rom disk, put it in the drive of computer, turn it on and watch it go.

Well after my intial experiments in the gnu/linux environment using DSL, I finally mustered the courage to try Fedora 4. While it offers a bautiful package using the KDE Desktop, it's functionality with multimedia devices lacks considrably. I had heard a lot about Mark Shutellworthy and Ubuntu, so I decided to give it a try. I fell in love with Ubuntu it has replaced my eula os wme as my primary OS of choice. I highly recommend this package.

The community that is involved with Ubuntu at large are the most friendly, helping, open-minded group I have met. Within days of installation I had most of my hardware functionaing and sat down and recorded my first song using Audacity. While some of my hardware; My TV Card (AI Tech Wave Watcher PCI) and my Dell usb all in one printer fax scanner, are still disfunctional in the environment. With some Googling, Ubuntu Wiki research, and irc.freenode.com #ubuntu attention I think I can get those working. My intention is to replace my Windows dependancy completly, and I am close to that goal with Ubuntu Breezy Badger.

More on my actual trials and error within the configuration of the Ubuntu kernel to suit my needs in my next installment.
